Reflections on Formative Influence
As per our discussion about "aufheben" in class (...to be filed in the "Well, duh" category):
The Guggenheim is currently staging an exhibition called The Great Upheaval. I hadn't made the connection between aufheben and the exhibition title, but this seems to make lots of sense, at least superficially. I haven't had time to check out the work, but it is presumably a collection of modernist works, pre-WWI. Interestingly, the word "upheaval" is translated from a different phrase than the word we used in class. The website refers to a "große Umwälzung (great upheaval)" as predicted by Kandinsky and Marc. The least it gives us is food for thought; I wonder if there may be any tenable connection between Umwälzung and our discussion of aufheben. My suspicion is that there is something related, especially considering Kandinsky's text On the Spiritual in Art.
