MSTU 6600 Fall 07, Spring 08
Agenda September 27, 2007
- Discussion of the assigned reading (30 mins)
- Student Presentation (1 hr)
Nabeel Ahmad will talk about IBM's Ongoing Learning/training initiatives.
Assigned Reading
Knowledge Building: Theory, Pedagogy, and Technology, Marlene Scardamalia & Carl Bereiter[1]
Think about the following in relation to the reading and be prepared to discuss these questions:
- Why do the authors argue that "…traditional educational practice—with its emphasis on knowledge transmission—as well as the newer constructivist methods both appear to be limited in scope if not entirely missing the point."? What's your reaction to their argument and why?
- How do the authors characterize procedural knowledge, declarative knowledge, knowledge of, and knowledge about? Why do they think the last two are more useful to education and knowledge creation, and what do you think?
